Advertising Guidelines

The Council of Better Business Bureaus produces a number of publications to provide guidelines for ethical advertising practices.

The Better Business Bureau Code of Advertising contains basic advertising standards for the guidance of advertisers, advertising agencies and advertising media. It includes guidelines for such areas as comparison claims, sale pricing, and "bait and switch" issues.

To assist advertisers in developing advertising aimed at children under the age of 12, CBBB's Children's Advertising Review Unit (CARU) has compiled CARU's Self-Regulatory Guidelines for Children's Advertising. These voluntary guidelines help guide businesses in creating truthful and accurate advertising, taking into account the uniquely impressionable and vulnerable child audience.

CARU also publishes Advertising and Your Child, a parent's guide to advertising issues, including strategies for helping children help themselves to understand and evaluate advertising.
